Britax Unity Vs Maxi Cosi Mico Plus
We are often asked about the differences between the Britax Unity Vs Maxi Cosi Mico Plus. As a result, I thought it is worth answering here. Below is our opinion based on the facts.
We will compare the Britax Unity Isofix model against the Maxo Cosi Mico Plus Isofix.
Firstly, and least important in our view, lets address the price. At an RRP level the Britax unity Isofix is $480 RRP. The Maxi Cosi Mico Plus Isofix is priced at $549 RRP. At a street price, currently, $449 seems to be the most common street price that you will pay for the Unity Safe n Sound Isofix Baby Capsule. The Maxi Cosi Mico Plus on the other hand is at a street price of currently $420.
So right now – price should not be a significant factor in the decision between the two as the Mico Plus from Maxi Cosi is around $30 cheaper. That’s neither here or there when it comes to your child’s safety or comfort or your convenience as a parent. But it is a win for Maxi Cosi.
Our opinion:
We choose the Maxi Cosi Mico Plus over the Britax Safe n Sound Unity Isofix when it comes to baby capsules.
Let me explain why….
Maxi Cosi ISOGO VS Britax Safe n Sound ISOFIX
The Maxi Cosi Mico Plus, as with all maxi cosi car seats and capsules has a very nice isofix solution. They call it ISOGO. What’s great about it is that you know for a fact that it has the correct tension. This is due to the green indicators which confirm it for you at the time of installation. This ensures a safer installation.
The Safe n Sound Unity from Britax does have ISOFIX but there is no indicators. This means you could be installing it with the incorrect tension. Statistics have shown that incorrect installation is the most common cause of injuries in baby car seats and baby capsules.
Britax Unity Vs Maxi Cosi Mico Plus on Side Impact Protection
Maxi Cosi Side impact protection is superior to other technologies and that is a fact. They have their own protection that was invented by their parent company Dorel. It is known as “Air Protect”. Most child injuries in car seats are from side impact type accidents. As a result, we view side impact protection high up on the list of safety features.
Maxi Cosi’s Air protect provide a controlled release of air to cushion the blow to the head. it is located on the inside of the seat beside the child’s head. This also means a softer hit of the child’s head. Other brands tried copying this and placed foam type protection on the outside of the capsule which does not compare at all in our expert opinion.
Enough said…
There is one key benefit that the Safe n Sound Unit has which is good. That is that they state it is large enough for a child to be in it for up to 12 months. Maxi Cosi rate theirs for babies up to 6 months.
The downside of being able to be used for up to 12 months that we hear from customers who chose the britax unity is that the front passenger does not have any leg room as they have to have the seat too far forward.
The type of car you drive will determine this and we would recommend you check this by dealing with a store who will let you test it in your specific vehicle before purchasing.
Both baby capsules are suitable for smaller premature babies, the unity has been certified however.
Fabrics…
Sun Protection and comfort are the next most important issues that you need to consider.
While the Mico Plus in both the ISOFIX and non ISOFIX models has an extendable and Water Resistant and UV Reflective Canopy, the Safe n Sound Unity by Britax does not.
Both have wicking fabric which is great. This fabric, no matter which way you go will literally wick the sweat away from them keeping the child cooler on those hot summer days.
Britax Unity Vs Maxi Cosi Mico Plus Additional features:
Both are aircraft compliant and both offer an accident exchange service – although we think the maxi cosi one is better.
Weight
More important is weight. Why? Because by the time you add the weight of a child to a baby capsule, some parents find the combination quite heavy. Maxi Cosi wins in this area. The Maxi Cosi Mico Plus comes in at 4.6Kg where as the Britax Unity comes in at 5Kg. Make no mistake – that extra half a kilo makes all the difference to some mums.
Warranty
Whilst both have good warranties against manufacturing faults, maxi cosi is better. The Britax Unity Safe n Sound has a 10 year warranty on the shell and 2 years on the fabric. The fabric is where faults are usually if any.
Taking into account that maxi cosi has a blanket Lifetime warranty, we would rate this as a better warranty.
Compatibility with Prams and Strollers
There is no point buying a capsule that is not compatible with your baby capsule. So the first thing you need to do is choose your pram and then find out which capsule is compatible as you may not have a choice.
It’s a fact that pretty much all top brands will be compatible with a maxi cosi capsule.
If you were in the US or Europe, most people do not call baby capsules a baby capsule – they literally call them a “Maxi Cosi”. Maxi Cosi over there is like Kleenex is to tissues.
That means that most international pram brands have gone to the trouble to make sure they are compatible with the Maxi Cosi Mico Plus.
This is another reason we think the Maxi Cosi Mico Plus wins. You are not limited to a britax stroller or one that is compatible with Britax. It leaves your pram options wide open.
