Baby Monitors Connected to Your Phone
Baby Monitors that connect to your mobile phone could be the best solution for your specific needs. There can also be downsides which I reveal in this article.
I have been selling baby monitors for almost 20 years now. Like all technology, it progresses at a very fast rate. I mean, I come from I.T. where the average lifecycle of a notebook product was 6 weeks. In saying this, Baby Monitors that you connect to your phone is the next tipping point in baby monitor technology.
This also includes tablets, both Apple and Android.
With new technology, you always have to consider the risks and downsides also. Connected baby monitors are not so much bleeding edge right now, but there is still risks and downsides if you do not get it right.
Risks of Phone connected Baby Monitors
Security
If you do not choose the right brand who has got it right, then there is security risks and the risk it may not work well and reliably.
Here’s a Video of just one of many examples of phone connected baby monitors with security problems
In the world of the internet, there is unfortunately not just the idiot keyboard warriors to deal with but also the evil of hackers and criminals who find it a challenge to hack things and they often start with hacking camera’s. These people see it as a sport and want to freak out parents or have more criminal intentions.
Ease of Setup
The other issue is the easy of connecting through your router to the internet. Some of the products that I have evaluated and refused to sell can be incredibly difficult to get to work reliably and correctly. Unless you are an I.T. networking Guru. And that’s coming from someone with lot of experience in I.T. and networking.
Smart Phone Apps
The next issue is the App for your smart device. How easy is it to use and how reliable is it? Does it crash all the time or worse cause other apps on your smart phone to crash? Will they keep bringing out updates to work on your next phone or tablet device?
Despite what a lot of people think, smart phone apps which actually work reliably are not cheap to make. They need to be extensively tested on both the android platform and the apple platform. Only big brands have the funds to get this right and keep updating for new devices.
Who wants to buy a new device to find out the apps don’t work on them? It’s happened to me…
Reliability
There is nothing worse than having a baby monitor system that you think is working to fail. You go to check and you can’t connect to your monitor. Then anxiety kicks in. All because the ISP or someone reset the router and then an IP address change happens. As a result, your monitor can’t handle the IP change automatically under certain circumstances. Or worse, it’s because your router isn’t quite set up perfectly.
Who can blame you? You’re not an I.T. networking expert, you’re a parent who just wants their baby monitor to work.
All this when the whole purpose of a baby monitor is to relieve mum and dad whilst out of the home of any anxiety!
Connected Baby Monitors that work properly & easily.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is this. If you go with a cheap option from an online market place and choose a brand which is not actually a brand that is an expert in this field, then you are putting yourself at risk here. The risk is: you can’t get it working reliably and securely. Or long term.
There are too many people who during covid have worked out that they can jump on a marketplace like amazon or ebay, buy a bucket load (or container load) of cheap no name brand products, slap a name on it, then let the amazon and ebay machine go to work selling it. This includes writing word spun blog articles on multiple sites. If it goes bad, no problem, shut the online market place store down after they are all sold at your cost price and get out.
Even some online baby stores have been jumping on the no-name band wagon selling their brands!
When it comes to Baby Monitors connected to to your Phone, do not fall for this and waste your money.
Brands of Phone connected Baby Monitors
Only buy a brand which is a true expert in communications and specifically, baby monitors. A brand who has invested and is here for the long term with a proven track record. One which is there to support you and resolve issues and has their own technical support hotline here in Australia.
The three brands which we have tested and recommend over all others are Vtech, Oricom and LeapFrog.
Additionally, buy from a baby store which has a bricks and mortar retail store. This way you have two layers of protection. After all, a baby monitor is not just about your anxiety or making a parent feel their baby is safe. A baby monitor truly about the safety of your baby and giving you the power to address an issue fast should something happen.
Good quality, well designed Baby Monitors that connect to your phone or tablet, give you the ability to keep an eye on baby when you are at home or out and about. Or even better, when baby is being looked after at a different location to you. ie. the grandparents or friends home.
Bonus Tip:
Now, do not assume that you have to buy a baby monitor with a screen included. You’re needs may not require a separate monitor. These days, more and more homes have multiple tablet devices and mobile phones.
Quite frankly, some parents don’t want or need another device to carry with them. If this is the case, there is now options to buy smart baby monitor camera’s from these same brands I mentioned earlier. These can connect to the internet and you can monitor them via your phone or tablet without a separate screen!
Two current solutions if this suits your needs is the Oricom OBHFCU HD Smart Camera and the Oricom HD Smart Camera OBH930PTZ which even has motorised pan and tilt! This might be perfect for you and save you money at the same time.
