New child restraint laws for Infant Car Seats and Child Booster Seats
Queensland
Dear Baby Children's Retailer,
On 11 September 2009, the Queensland Government introduced new child restraint legislation to improve the safety and protection of children in vehicles.
Enclosed are posters and brochures to help communicate these changes to the public. I am requesting your assistance in promoting these new child restraint laws to parents and carers visiting your store.
The new child restraint laws will come into effect from 11 March 2010 as part of the Queensland Government's commitment to improving road safety and to bring the state into line with the national road rules.
From 11 March 2010 all children up to seven years of age will need to be secured in an Australian Safety Standard approved child restraint, such as a capsule, child seat or booster seat, according to their age and size.
The following table provides a guide for parents and carers to selecting a suitable child restraint.
| Age | Indicative Weight | Child Restraint |
| 0 to 6 months | less than 8 kgs | rearward facing baby capsule or infant restraint |
| 6 months to 1 year | 8 to 12kgs | rearward or forward facing infant restraint |
| 6 months to 4 years | 8 to 18kgs | forward facing child restraint with built-in harness |
| 4 years to 7 years | 14 to 26 kgs | booster seat with H-harness or a booster seat with a secured adult seatbelt |
Drivers can be fined $300 and 3 demerit points for travelling with an unrestrained or incorrectly restrained child in the vehicle. An additional penalty for each unrestrained or incorrectly restrained child will also apply.
A child July stop using a child restraint once they turn seven or if their eye level is above the back of the booster seat.
Further information on the new legislation and requirements is also available on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website -www.transport.qld.qov.au/childrestraints or phone 132380.
Thank you very much for your support and for helping educate parents and carers about the new laws and improving children's safety on the roads.
Yours sincerely,
Mike Stapleton
