Maternity Wear
Maternity Wear is an important part of your pregnancy. You will need them for six to seven months at least. Maternity Wear is not just about what you wear and how you look. It also assists in how you feel. You want to be assured that they are stylish and comfortable and make life easier where possible such as breast feeding.
One of the most important pieces of maternity clothing will be your maternity bra. Many women prefer underwire fashion bras and are confused when told these are not recommended during pregnancy or lactation.
The reason for this is due to your changing breast shape. When breastfeeding, the breasts can increase and decrease in size during the day, as milk is produced and removed. Retained fluid in late pregnancy can also cause the breast to swell. Although only a slight change in size is occurring, a rigid underwire may put pressure on the breast when it is fuller. Such pressure can lead to blocked milk ducts or mastitis and it is for this reason inflexible underwire bras are not recommended. This is why we highly recommend the Carriwell Gelwire Bra below.
Do’s and Don’ts
Don’t wear restrictive clothing such as tight belts or stockings with elastic bands.
Do wear maternity support pantyhose or stockings.
You don’t want anything restrictive around your midsection but you do want to keep the blood flowing. This is the reason for support stockings. Pull them on before getting out of bed in the morning and before blood has a chance to pool in your legs to help minimize the risk of varicose veins.
Don’t strut around in stilettos. It’s just not the right timing plus that wouldn’t be a pretty fall.
Do wear flats or shoes with wide chunky heels. Slip-on’s will also be a very helpful as your feet become harder to reach.
Don’t wear a long sleeve sweater with nothing underneath during cold weather.
Do layer your clothing. Your metabolic rate increases by about 20 percent when you’re pregnant. Even if everyone else is shivering, you might be complaining about the heat. With a layered look, you can peel clothes off as needed.

Common Maternity Wear Questions Answered
Why should I avoid underwire bras during pregnancy?
Rigid underwires can place pressure on changing breast tissue, leading to blocked milk ducts or mastitis. Soft, flexible options like the Carriwell Gelwire Bra offer comfort and support without the risks.
When should I start wearing maternity clothes?
Most expecting mums start needing maternity wear around the second trimester—roughly 12–16 weeks. It depends on your body and how quickly you're growing.
What footwear is best during pregnancy?
Choose flats or shoes with wide, chunky heels for balance and comfort. Slip-ons are especially handy as reaching your feet becomes harder.
Are support stockings really necessary?
Yes! Maternity support stockings help improve circulation and reduce the risk of varicose veins. They work best when worn before getting out of bed in the morning.
